Doctor Who-Language and representation

Language and contexts

1) Write a summary of the notes from our in-class analysis of the episode. You can use your own notes from the screening in class or this Google document of class notes (you'll need your GHS Google login).

Camerawork and sound: Music-theme tune for Doctor Who Flashbacks scenes

Mise-en-scene:setting-junkyard,lighting  is dark, setting inside the tardis is dark, costume is typical hair of the 1960s

Narrative and genre:dimensions is time and space, shadow in final shot is an action and enigma code

2) How can we apply narrative theories to this episode of  Doctor Who

Todorov's Equilibrium:Susan tries to act like every normal teenager inside the school. Then there is a disruption in the story line where the teachers follow Susan home.

Propp's character theory:In the story the villain is the grandfather because he kidnapped the teachers in the TARDIS.Also the false hero are the teachers because they fail to save Susan.

Barthes's enigma and action codes:In the story the enigma code is when the TARDIS flies off. This makes the               audience very curious because they don't know what will happen next.

Levi-Strauss's binary opposition:Susan shows she is very intelligent and can spot mistakes because the media does not show the full side of stories of what actually happens.

3) In your opinion, what is the most important scene in the episode and why?

Where the teachers get taken away in the TARDIS.This is important because a fight occurs in the TARDIS when the teachers try to escape

4) What genre is An Unearthly Child and how can you tell? Make specific reference to aspects of the episode.

It is sci-fi because it relates with science fiction. For example the TARDIS and inside the TARDIS.

5) How does An Unearthly Child reflect the social and historical contexts of the 1960s?

It shows historical context because it shows the difference between the modern day and the old days where everything was different. For social context it shows how women became more powerful and started to become better about themselves. For example susan is smart.

Representation

1) What stereotypes of men are reinforced and subverted in Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child? How?

Stereotypes are reinforced in Doctor Who because they are seen as much more dominant and in Power. However some stereotypes are subverted because Ian could not protect Barbara.

2) What stereotypes of women/girls are reinforced and subverted in Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child? How?

In Doctor Who stereotypes are highly reinforced with the grandfather this is because he shut Barbara out of the picture and would not speak to her because he found her not important. However stereotypes are subverted for susan because she is very smart.

3) What representations of race/ethnicity can be found in Doctor Who: An Earthly Child? Is this surprising or not? Give reasons for your answer and consider historical / cultural context (the 1960s). Has this changed in more recent series of Doctor Who?

In Doctor who there is only white people seen in the show whereas in An Unearthly Child there is a diverse range of ethnicities. In Doctor who this is not suprising because most white people were seen in the media.

4) How is social class represented in An Unearthly Child? Think about how education and knowledge is presented in the episode.

Social class is represented by showing susans smartness. For example she is more smarter than the students and the teachers. This is very unique because it shows than she is better than everyone else.
