Radio: KISS FM Breakfast show CSP

 Audience

Look at the KISS media pack carefully. This will give you a brilliant background to the brand and how they target their audience (important note: it features the old Breakfast presenting team).

Answer the following questions:

1) Read page 2. What is KISS FM's mission?

Entertain people who are from 15-34

2) Look at page 3. What is the target audience for KISS FM? As well as writing the key statistics from the media pack, try and suggest what psychographic groups would fit the KISS audience too.

Their target audience is mainstream because they want to reach a wider audience.I think that also people who are aspirers would like KISS.

3) Now look at page 5 - The KISS network. How does KISS use digital media and technology to reach its audience?

There is an app called KISS kube which helps engage the audience.

4) Now look at the other side of page 5. What content do KISS Fresh and KISSTORY offer and how can audiences access those stations?

KISSTORY is seen to play songs that are more older for the older audience who listens to the music. On the other hand KISS Fresh plays much more newer songs that have came out by artists.

5) Read page 6. What are the different ways audiences can actively engage with the KISS radio brand?

They can engage on online platforms as well as on live events

6) Are listeners to the KISS Breakfast show active or passive? You can argue this point either way - explain your opinion in your answer.

I believe that most of the audience is active. This is because there are many ways to tune in with the presenters and ask questions to them and the presenters will answer them live on radio. However if they are on their phone they will see it there

7) Now think about the clips you've watched or listened to of the KISS FM Breakfast show with Jordan and Perri. What audience pleasures are offered by the KISS FM Breakfast show? Use Blumler and Katz Uses and Gratifications theory here.

Personal relationship-Some of the audience will feel a sense of personal relationship towards Jordan and perry because of the jokes they make.

Diversion-Some of the audience will see the video as an escapism because it is funny and entertaining and it distracts them from the real world.

8) How have audiences changed in terms of how they listen to music and radio since the 1960s?

Nowerdays most people use their phone to access music. This is because it is seen as way more convenient and people can listen to it at any time and anywhere. In the more earlier years people used radio to listen to music it was seen as less convenient however it was still able to get the job done of playing music

9) How does the KISS FM Breakfast show contrast with Tony Blackburn's 1967 Radio 1 Breakfast show and the launch of BBC Radio 1?

KISS FM was more diverse and unique and had many parts towards the music.Tony Blackburns radio was seen as more less diverse however he was also seen as popular due to the fact he had a good connection to his audience

10) Use Stuart Hall's Reception theory to offer a preferred and oppositional reading of the KISS FM Breakfast show. For the preferred reading, why do fans love the show? On the oppositional side, why might someone criticise the show or not want to listen?

Preferred reading-Interesting and seen as very entertaining for people due to the fact that there is a good personal relationship between the audience and the presenters.

Oppositional reading-Some people may find the songs boring and think that it does not fit the trend of social media music today

Industry

They have other radios and streaming channels

The station started in 1985 as a pirate radio station, Kiss FM, before becoming the UK's first legal black and dance music specialist radio station in 1990. As of March 2024, the station has a weekly audience of 2.2 million listeners according to RAJAR.
